Young Leaders Academy of South Sudan
A college prep program guiding academically talented South Sudanese students to compete and win admissions and full scholarships at elite institutions in the United States.
About YLASS
The Young Leaders Academy of South Sudan (YLASS) was founded by Emmanuel Malou Deng and Piok Deng Mayiik, South Sudanese students at Columbia University and Dartmouth College respectively. The program was established after the realization that academically talented students from South Sudan were missing out on admissions to top universities due to the daunting U.S. college application process.
YLASS provides students with the resources and knowledge to overcome the bottlenecks that prevent deserving students from accessing an American education. Our students apply directly to universities, and it is the universities that award them scholarships. YLASS prepares students to become so competitive that rejecting them over other applicants is almost impossible.

Our Founders
YLASS was born from a simple realization: South Sudan has no shortage of brilliant, driven students — but they lacked the guidance to navigate the complex U.S. college application process. Having walked that path themselves as Bridge2Rwanda scholars, Piok and Emmanuel knew exactly what it took — and what was missing. In 2022, they decided to bridge that gap.
Co-Founder
Dartmouth College
Piok graduated from Dartmouth College with a degree in Economics and a minor in Government as a King Scholar — a four-year fully funded scholarship. Before Dartmouth, he scored 95.1% on the South Sudan Certificate of Secondary Examinations, ranking 2nd in the entire country. A Bridge2Rwanda Leadership Academy alumnus, Piok served as an MLDP Facilitator at Dartmouth's Rockefeller Center for Public Policy. He co-founded YLASS to ensure that talented South Sudanese students receive the same guidance that transformed his own trajectory.
Co-Founder
Columbia University
Emmanuel studies Economics and Political Science at Columbia University. He scored 92.9% on the South Sudan Certificate of Secondary Examinations, ranking 5th nationally, and is a Bridge2Rwanda Leadership Academy alumnus. Beyond academics, Emmanuel is an essayist and writer on South Sudanese politics, economics, and cultural identity. He serves as YLASS's primary college counselor, bringing firsthand knowledge of the application process to mentor each cohort of students through their journey to top universities.
